MORAGA, Calif. - Jacob Johnson recorded six hits and three home runs in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional this past weekend and helped the Gaels knock off number one overall seed UCLA twice to earn the final Shamrock Office Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week award of the 2025-26 academic year.
Johnson was a part of history this past weekend down at Jackie Robinson Stadium where Saint Mary's made its second consecutive and third overall NCAA Regional appearance. Johnson and the Gaels shocked the country with a 3-2 regional opening victory on Friday over the Bruins before defeating the top-ranked team in the country for a second time on Sunday to end UCLA's season. Saint Mary's became the first four-seed in a regional to defeat the number one overall seed in their opening game in NCAA Tournament history and also became the only team to single handedly eliminate the number one national seed, beating them twice in the same regional.
Jacob Johnson put the country on notice with a three-homer weekend and all three home runs coming against UCLA. Johnson homered twice against the Bruins on Friday including the go-ahead homer in the top of the ninth to put Saint Mary's up 3-2. That was Johnson's second multi-homer game of the season as the first year Gael finished his regional opener 3-for-4. Johnson went 2-for-3 from the plate in the Gaels' game two defeat to Cal Poly and then homered once again against UCLA in the elimination game on Sunday, helping the Gaels to a dramatic 6-5 walk-off victory. Johnson finished his 2026 season with a .338 batting average, 71 hits, 15 doubles, 15 home runs and 54 RBI as he was named to the All-WCC Honorable Mention prior to the conference tournament.
