SYDNEY, Australia – Saint Mary's woke up early Friday morning in Sydney, in preparation for their quickest turnaround of games on the Australian Tour. Following a late Thursday night, the Gaels faced the Sydney Kings at 10:30 a.m. local time Friday morning.
The Gaels didn't let the short rest slow them down, as they learned from the previous game and used a strong second half to beat the Sydney Kings 85-72 in front of friends and family in a non-public game at the Hoops Capitol East.
For the second game in a row, Mantas Juzenas led the Gaels in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Juzenas also added eight rebounds.
Four Gaels scored in double figures, including freshman Darius Bivins, who had 10 points and added four assist. The inside presence of Salih Altuntas and Vangelis Zougris each had 11 points and six rebounds each.
Saint Mary's once again had an advantage in the paint, outrebounding Sydney 44-38, including 13 offensive rebounds. The Gaels also had a 44-22 points-in-the-paint performance.
Myles Che got the start at the two-guard position this morning and had seven points and Kevin Gad came off the bench to score seven points
Joining the Gaels at the game was a host of alumni. Matthew Dellavedova didn't suit up for the Kings today, but former Gael Harry Wessels got the start at center for Sydney. In the crowd watching was Mitchell Young, Jorden Page, Paul McCoy and Lucas Walker.
Saint Mary's now heads to Melbourne for the next four days, taking Saturday off, before returning to the court on Sunday to face the South East Melbourne Phoenix at 1 p.m. local time. Sunday's game will be livestreamed through the NBL platform. The link is highlighted below.
