MELBOURNE, Australia – For the final full day in Melbourne of the Saint Mary's men's basketball team's Australian Foreign Tour, the Gaels left with a convincing 90-70 win over the Dandenong Rangers of the NBL1 on Monday night at the Courtside Hoops City.
The Gaels never trailed in the game and had four players score in double figures, including a double-double by Salih Altuntas, who scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds.
Luke Fennell started at the two-guard spot and had a strong night playing in his hometown. Fennell scored 12 points, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range and added five rebounds.
Darius Bivins scored 12 points, including two 3-pointers, Mantas Juzenas had 11 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Jazz Gardner had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. Overall, the Gaels made 10 3-pointers on the night and outrebounded the Rangers 55-24.
The Gaels led 45-24 at halftime, and jumped out to an early lead to start the game with Altuntas leading the way, scoring the first 10 points of the game himself.
After playing a hard-fought game on Sunday afternoon in Melbourne, the Gaels used most of the morning to rest prior to playing Monday night and didn't take in too much of the scenes around town.
The Gaels leave early Tuesday morning to head north for their last leg of the tour, when they visit Cairns for the next four days. Tuesday will be a full travel day and rest as they settle into their hotel. Wednesday night, Saint Mary's will play its final game of the tour against the Cairns Taipans at 6:30 p.m. Australian time.
