MSOC | Gaels Go Unbeaten on Omaha Road Trip; Cameron Kobey Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's men's soccer midfielder Cameron Kobey led the team with two goals and an assist in an unbeaten road trip to be named the department's Student-Athlete of the Week for the first time in his SMC career.
Kobey and the Gaels had a tall task this past weekend with a Midwest road trip against No. 12 Creighton and Summit League members Omaha. The Gaels pulled off the improbable on Thursday, scoring three times in the final 20 minutes of regulation to erase a three-goal deficit and tie No. 12 Creighton 3-3. Kobey scored the second goal for the Gaels from the penalty spot for his second converted penalty kick of the season. Just eight minutes later, Kobey floated a header pass into the box that found the head of Henry Beatty who flicked it up and over the keeper to tie the game in the 80th minute. The assist for Kobey went down as his second of the season.
On Sunday, Saint Mary's found themselves behind the eight ball once again after going down 1-0 in the 16th minute. Despite being held scoreless through the first 45 minutes, they struck twice in the second half to complete another comeback, but this time to earn all three points on the road. Kobey scored the equalizer in the 77th minute off a nice turn and finish inside the box before Drew Shoji netted the game-winner off a counter attack in the 86th minute to give Saint Mary's the gritty 2-1 victory. Kobey now leads the team with a career-high four goals and is tied for the team lead with two assists over his eight games played this season.
Saint Mary's will round out its non-conference schedule this weekend and host UC Davis on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m. The match can be streamed live on ESPN+ and tickets can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets.
