Joseph O’Connell Earns First Career Saint Mary’s Student Athlete of the Week

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's men's cross country runner Joseph O'Connell earned his first career Student-Athlete of the Week award following his debut as a Gael at the Saint Mary's Invitational this past week.

The Saint Mary's Invitational marked the first home meet for the Gaels since the 2021 West Coast Conference Championships. O'Connell became the first men's cross country runner of the season to receive the weekly honor after placing second overall in a field of 140 runners. The transfer redshirt senior completed the 7.853K race in 23:05.6 to help the Gaels to a second place finish out of 13 competing teams. The result was the best team finish since Saint Mary's placed first in a field of seven teams at the 2024 Pacific Invitational.

Saint Mary's will look to carry the momentum as they return to action on Friday, October 2 in the 2026 edition of the Pacific Invitational.
