Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head men's basketball coach Dave Bollwinkel announced today that Chase Poole (Austin, TX) and Chris Schlatter (Concord, CA) signed national letters of intent to play for the Gaels next fall.
Poole, a 6-8, 205 pound forward, is a highly touted player from the Austin, Texas area. Last year at Crockett High School, he averaged 17.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game as a junior. Poole was an All-District and an Academic All-District selection for the 1998-99 season.
"Coach Tim Murphy first spotted Chase in the Great Texas Shootout this past July," said coach Bollwinkel. "We liked him from the outset since we were looking for a mobile, active, and aggressive forward. Chase fits the mold as he runs the floor well and is an excellent offensive rebounder, making good use of his long arms and jumping ability. We believe that as he gains strength, Chase has the potential to be an excellent player in the West Cost Conference."
Schlatter, a 6-6, 190 pound forward, averaged 12 points and five rebounds per game last year, under the tutelage of Frank Allocco at De La Salle High School. A local player from Concord, CA, Schlatter was named first team All-Bay Valley Athletic League, San Francisco Examiner third team All-Metro, and was a 1998 Vonture Classic All Tournament team selection.
"As last summer progressed, Chris really began to assert himself offensively and his stock rose dramatically this fall," said Bollwinkel. "He is a fine shooter who knows how to play, having benefited from Frank Allocco's coaching at De La Salle. His knowledge of the game will be a great asset as he learns to play in our motion offense. We are excited about Chris joining our program and look forward to four great years of basketball with and from him."
