
Football Falls to Cal Poly, 41-20

San Luis Obispo, CA - The Saint Mary's College football team (2-4), fell to Cal Poly (2-4), 41-20, on Saturday, October 7, at Mustang Stadium. Sophomore running back Jeff Brown led the Gael offense with 205 total yards and two touchdowns.
The two teams combined for 941 yards of total offense in the game with Saint Mary's racking up a school record 529 yards. Although Saint Mary's won the yardage battle, the Gaels also totaled more turnovers than the Mustangs. Saint Mary's committed five turnovers in the contest, four fumbles and one interception.
Brown, responsible for 40 percent of the Gaels' offensive output, rushed for 114 yards on 17 carries with one rushing touchdown and added 91 yards receiving on three catches with one touchdown. Gael quarterback Gus Papanikolas had his best passing game of the season, completing 11-of-20 passes for 197 yards with one TD and one interception. He also added 46 yards rushing on 13 carries. On defense junior defensive end Travis White tallied four sacks, tying the school's single game mark. He also had seven tackles, including five for a loss of 21 yards.
For Cal Poly, quarterback Seth Burford led the way with 309 yards passing and completed 18-of-26 pass attempts. He was responsible for four touchdowns on the night, throwing three touchdowns and rushing for another in the win. Mustang receiver Ryan McCarty connected with Burford three times in the game for 91 yards and two scores.
Cal Poly posted the lone score in the first quarter when Burford connected with Kassim Osgood in the corner of the end zone for a seven-yard scoring strike to cap a 13-play 65-yard scoring drive midway through the period. The Gaels would answer early in the second quarter when Travis White scored on a one-yard rush, knotting the score at 7-7. Burford would then connect with McCarty on touchdown passes of 55 and 25 yards to open a 21-7 Mustang lead late in the first half. Saint Mary's answered with a 2-yard touchdown run by Brown to complete an 83-yard drive in 1:28 to cut the lead to 21-13 at halftime.
On the first drive of the second half, Cal Poly marched 80 yards in 10 plays to increase its lead to 28-13 four minutes in the third quarter. Brown would score his sixth touchdown of the season on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Papanikolas with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter. That would mark the final score for the Gaels and Cal Poly would go on to add another touchdown and two field goals to complete the scoring.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Saturday, October 14 when they host Menlo College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Saint Mary's Stadium.
