
Men's Basketball Defeats Dominican University 90-70

Moraga, CA - Freshman forward Chris Schlatter (Lafayette, CA) paced the Saint Mary's men's basketball team (1-6) with a career-high 19 points as the Gaels defeated NAIA Dominican University (2-8), 90-70 at McKeon Pavilion on Thursday night.
Saint Mary's jumped out to a quick 10-point lead (13-3) just 3:49 into the game and never trailed on the night. Schlatter scored six of his 19 points during the 13-3 run to open the game. The Gaels increased the lead to as many as 20 points, twice in the first half, when Teohn Conner (Ferriday, LA) converted an easy lay-up following a Saint Mary's steal. The Penguins cut the lead to 28-12 with 7:08 remaining in the first, but two free throws by Ross Benson (Everett, WA) and a basket by Schlatter opened the lead to 20 points again. Dominican cut the lead to 14 points (41-27) at the 1:23 mark, but a 5-0 run to end the half gave Saint Mary's a 46-27 advantage heading into the locker room.
Saint Mary's scored the first four points of the second half on baskets by Jovan Harris (Richmond, CA) and Benson to open a 50-27 lead, the largest of the night for the Gaels. Dominican University continued to play hard, cutting the Saint Mary's 23-point lead to 14 by the 10:03 mark of the second half. Saint Mary's then went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:12 to regain its 23-point advantage. From there, the Gaels cruised to a 20-point win, for their first victory of the season.
Schlatter, who was 7-of-9 from the floor including 2-of-3 from three-point range, led five Gaels in double-figures. Conner netted a career-high with 15 points, grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and added five assists. Harris scored 13 points and had a game-high six assists and Benson and Chase Poole (Austin, TX) added 12 and 10 points each, respectively.
For the Penguins, Sean Scruby led the way with 19 points and six rebounds before fouling out with 14:20 remaining in the game. James Nixon was the only other Dominican player to reach double-figures with 12 points.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, December 16 when they travel to the University of Nevada at Reno. Tip-off at Lawlor Events Center is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
