Athletic Hall of Fame to Induct 12 New Members

Moraga, CA -- Saint Mary's College will honor 12 individuals for their contributions to Saint Mary's Athletics this weekend when they are inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 12.

Inductees will be honored at a mass in Saint Mary's chapel at 10:15 a.m., followed by a reception at 11:00 a.m. and a luncheon at noon. 10 former student-athletes and two important members of the Saint Mary's community who contributed their time, talent and spirit in supporting student-athletes will make up the class this year. The 2000 Hall of Fame Class includes the following:

Brother Mel Anderson, FSC '51 - President of the College from 1969-97. Was a major contributor and steward to the progress of Gael athletics, including the construction of Saint Mary's Stadium, McKeon Pavilion, the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex, the Pat Vincent Rugby Field and the Silvio Garaventa Sr. Soccer Field.

Lisa (Bertaccini) Ward '86 - lettered all four years in both basketball and volleyball. Won two national titles, one in volleyball (1984) and soccer (1986). Ranks second all-time with 562 assists and first with 286 steals. Was awarded the George R. McKeon Award in 1986 as the top female scholar-athlete.

John Braff '88 - was a two-time Division II All-American and is second all-time with 193 career receptions and third on the single season list with 62 receptions during the 1988 campaign. Caught a Saint Mary's record 15 passes against Santa Clara in 1988, including the game-winning touchdown to clinch a perfect 10-0 season.

Matt Castello '84 - was a two-time All-NCBA shortstop and was a two-time team MVP in 1983 and 1984. Played semi-pro baseball from 1984-88 and is currently the head baseball coach at De La Salle High School.

Frank Cavalier '88 - perhaps the finest defensive tackle in school history, holds career records for sacks (32) and tackles for loss (53). A two-time team captain, his 355 career tackles rank third in the Saint Mary's record books.

Anne (Cooper) Silva '86 - excelled in both volleyball and basketball. Is the school leader in career points scored (1,800), second in rebounds (1,226), second in steals (221) and third in blocks (74). Was a Kodak All-American in basketball and an NAIA All-American in volleyball. Had the highest hitting percentage in a single season in school history and is tied for second place in the total number of matches played.

Beth (Litell) Overton '88 - Regarded as the greatest female goal keeper in Gael history. Holds the school-record with 31 career shutouts and posted a single-season best 15 shutouts in the 1987 season. Holds both the season and career goals-against average marks of 0.48 in the 1987 season and 0.97 in her career.

Fran McDermott '80 - was a two-time Division II All-American selection in football and holds the school records for most interceptions in a career (21), season (8) and game (4). Played in the Canadian Football League for five years, where he was the Rookie of the Year for Saskatschewan in 1982.

Pattie McDermott (Posthumously)- Pattie's dedication and love for the College dates back more than 22 years. She came to the College in October of 1977 as a volunteer in the athletic department and held the positions of Interim Sports Information Director and secretary for Gael Sports before becoming the College's first ticket manager in December of 1978. She held that position until her retirement in February of 1999. She was made an Honorary Alumna by the Alumni Association in 1998.

Jeff Peterson '84 - was a four-time all NCBA selection, three times as a pitcher and once a first baseman, in addition to be being a Sporting News First Team All-American. Is Saint Mary's strike out leader in a season (139) and career (350). After moving to first base due to an arm injury his senior year, Peterson hit .302 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI.

Dick Piedmonte '49 - earned 12 letters in baseball (4), football (4), track and field (3) and basketball (1). Was a member of the famous 1945 football team that competed in the Sugar Bowl and made up the infamous Phoenix outfield along with Herman Wedemeyer and Ed Ryan.

Tim Rosenkranz '90 - is second all-time with 6,267 career passing yards, 480 completions and 51 touchdown passes. Among his many accomplishment, Rosenkranz is most remembered for throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to Jon Braff to lead the Gaels to a 27-24 win over Santa Clara and a perfect 10-0 mark.

The latest selection of inductees brings the number of members in the Hall of Fame to 267. To be considered for induction, former student-athletes are nominated by alumni, family and friends. Their names are then sent to members of the Hall of Fame Honor's Court where research is done into the athlete's records and accomplishments. When the data is complete, candidates are then evaluated and deemed eligible based on the following criteria: candidate must have been out of school for at least five years; normally must have earned a Saint Mary's degree; and is evaluated on athletic achievement and for his/her contributions to Saint Mary's College and his/her community.
