This Week in Gael Hoops:
Saint Mary's will hit the road for week two of the West Coast Conference season. The Gaels will travel to rival Santa Clara on Thursday, January 18 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the newly remodeled Leavey Events Center. From there SMC will head south to the University of San Diego for a Saturday match up against the Toreros. Tip-off at the new Jenny Craig Pavilion is set for 7:00 p.m.
Saint Mary's is coming off an 0-2 week after suffering back-to-back losses to Portland (61-43) and Gonzaga (102-48) to open its conference season.

Broncos Bites:
Saint Clara enters Thursday's meeting following a 1-1 week to open its conference season. The Broncos opened their WCC season with an 87-66 loss at Pepperdine followed by a 78-70 win over LMU on Saturday. Currently, SCU is averaging 66.5 points per game while allowing its opponents 69.4 points per game. Santa Clara is shooting just .397 from the floor and .290 from three point range. They have been consistent on the boards, averaging 38.4 rebounds per game slightly, higher than their opponents mark of 37.6 boards per game.
All-West Coast Conference guard Brian Jones leads the Broncos in a number of offensive categories including scoring (16.5 ppg), assists (4.1 apg) and three pointers made (27) while grabbing 4.8 rebounds per game.
Two other players are scoring in double-figures. Jamie Holmes is scoring at a clip of 13.8 points per game while leading the team in rebounds with 6.9 per game. Steve Ross is behind Holmes in both categories, averaging 11.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game from his forward position.
Dick Davey is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Broncos and has a 149-98 overall record. During his first eight years, Davey has an 11-6 record against the Gaels. To his credit Davey has led the Broncos to three NCAA appearances and three WCC titles.

The Saint Mary's versus Santa Clara rivalry has seen the teams meet 173 times, with the Broncos holding a 118-55 lead in the series. Santa Clara swept the Gaels last season, posting victories of 61-47 and 83-63.

Toreros Tidbits:
San Diego enters the week with an 8-7 record following an 0-2 start to the conference season. The Toreros suffered a 62-59 loss at Loyola Marymount on Friday, then lost to Pepperdine, 83-73, on Saturday.
San Diego is scoring 69.6 points per game and holding its opponents to 65.5 points per game. USD is shooting a combined .448 from the floor, .349 from three point range and .647 from the free throw line. The Toreros hold a +6.6 rebounding margin over their opponents, averaging 36.7 rebounds per game compared to their opponents' 30.1 rebounds per game.
The most productive scorer for San Diego is junior guard Andre Laws. Laws is averaging 11.9 points per game on the season. The guard tandem of Laws and Dana White are averaging 6.0 assists per game with White posting a team-high 49 total assists. Laws is joined in double figures by Sam Adamo, who is averaging 10.2 points per game. Tyler Fields, who is one of two players to start every game for the Toreros, leads the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.
Brad Holland, a two-time WCC Coach of the Year, has led the Toreros to a 102-80 overall mark in six plus seasons. He guided San Diego to a 20-9 finish last season, his first 20-win season in his coaching career. Holland has a 6-7 overall mark against Saint Mary's, winning four of the last five meetings.
The Series:
Following a season sweep last year, San Diego now leads the overall series 25-23. The Toreros posted back-to-back victories, defeating Saint Mary's 73-46 at McKeon Pavilion then two nights later posted a 69-52 victory in San Diego. The last Gael victory came during the 1998-99 season as Saint Mary's posted a 65-60 victory at the WCC Tournament.
Head Coach Dave Bollwinkel:
Dave Bollwinkel (California, 1972) is 35-66 in his fourth season at Saint Mary's, 92-146 overall. Hired on May 2, 1997, Bollwinkel served as an assistant under Ernie Kent in 1996-97 before taking over his current position. He was the head coach at Cal Poly Pomona from 1987-92 and was an assistant at Dayton, Wisconsin, Oregon, San Jose State and Colorado State. A native of the Bay Area, Bollwinkel grew up in Lafayette and graduated from Campolindo High School - just a few miles from Saint Mary's. A 1972 graduate of Cal, Bollwinkel attended Princeton for one year before transferring to Cal to play football for the Bears.
Game 15: Gonzaga 102 - Saint Mary's 48
Gonzaga guard Dan Dickau posted his second straight double-double with 15 points and 12 assists to lead the Bulldogs to a 102-48 victory over Saint Mary's on Saturday night at McKeon Pavilion.
Gonzaga took a 3-0 lead on a trey by Blake Stepp to open the game and never looked back. The Zags opened a 12-4 lead at the 16:26 and say the lead shrink to four (15-11) when Jovan Harris netted both free throws at the 13:31 mark. From there, Gonzaga went on a 21-4 run over the next eight minutes to open a 23 point lead with 5:38 left in the first half, eventually posting a 40-20 advantage at the intermission.
Gonzaga shot 72.4 percent (21-29) from the field in the second half, scoring 62 points in the period. Gonzaga used runs of 13-2, 20-6, and 13-0 in the period en route to the lopsided victory.
Harris tried to keep the Gaels in the game as he scored 21 points to lead all scorers. He was 6-for-16 from the floor and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Harris was joined in double figures by Ross Benson's 10 points.
For Gonzaga, six players tallied double figures. Dickau's 15 led the way and he was followed by Casey Calvary and Jermaine Forbes with 14 each. Forbes was perfect from the field, hitting all five shots he took including 4-for-4 from behind the arc. Mark Spine and Alex Hernandez added 11 points, each and Kyle Bankhead tallied 10. Cory Violette missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Game 14: Portland 61 - Saint Mary's 43
Travis Andrews scored 13 points to lead the Portland Pilots to a 61-43 victory over Saint Mary's at McKeon Pavilion in front of 1,023 fans on Friday night.
Chris Baert led the way for the Gaels with 13 points and Tyler Herr added 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the floor while adding two 3-point baskets. Teohn Conner added six points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead his team.
The first basket of the game came at the 16:20 mark when Baert found Ross Benson for an easy lay-in. Portland went on a 9-2 run to open a 9-4 advantage only to see the Gaels regain the lead, for the last time, at 14-13 with 7:24 remaining in the first period. Portland regained the lead, for good, on two free throws by Philip Dejworek. Neither team shot the ball well in the first half with Saint Mary's 25.9 percent from the floor compared to the 32.0 percent of the Pilots.
After posting a 26-21 advantage at the half, Portland opened the second half with a 13-4 run to take a commanding 39-25 lead with 12:41 left in regulation. The Gaels would get as close as 46-37 with 6:49 to play. From there, Portland went on a 16-6 run to close out the game and cruise to the victory.
Portland's shooting in the second half, 58.3 percent from the field, was the difference in the game. Saint Mary's converted 28.6 percent of its attempts and finished the game just 15-of-55 from the floor.
For Portland, three players finished in double-figures with center Tim Frost and reserve Cocy Rochin adding 10 points each. Rochin also added a team-high seven boards.
What's Up Next for the Gaels:
Saint Mary's returns home to host the two Los Angeles schools on Friday and Saturday. The Gaels square off against Loyola Marymount on Friday, January 26 then take on the WCC favorite Pepperdine on Saturday, January 27. Tip-off for both games is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
