Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's basketball team (4-5) held off a late Eastern Washington (5-7) run to win 73-67 in McKeon Pavilion. Senior Ethnie Stubbs (Freeport, Bahamas) led the Gaels with 15 points in his first career start.
The Gaels had four players record double-digits in scoring. Besides Stubbs' 15, junior Samuel Saint-Jean (Versailes, France) added 13 points, a career high, going 2-for-4 from the field and 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Chase Poole (Austin, TX) added 12 points. Sophomore Paul Marigney (Oakland, CA) had 10 points, going 3-for-7 from the field. Senior Teohn Conner (Ferriday, LA) finished with a game high 12 rebounds to go along with six points.
Saint Mary's started the game with a 5-0 run but neither team shot the ball well scoring a combined 20 points after the first eight minutes. Eastern Washington led by as much as seven points at the 3:08 minute mark. Anthony Woodards (Richmond, CA) hit a jumper just before the buzzer to bring the Gaels within one at the end of the half.
In the second half the Eagles Darren Cooper hit a three pointer to tie the game at 39 a piece in the beginning of the second half. The Gaels would then go on a 16-0 run that helped change momentum and give the Gaels all they needed. The Eagles would then have a late surge to fall short by six at the final buzzer.
Eastern Washington's Gregg Smith led the Eagles with 13 points going 6-for-9 from the floor. As a team the Gaels shot 42 percent to the Eagles 40 percent. The Gaels also out-rebounded the Eagles 35-31.
The Gaels will now travel to play the New Mexico Lobos at the Lobo Invitational held in The Pit. This game will be played on Saturday, December 28, tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
