Final Stats
Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's basketball team (3-4) quickly disposed of the Banana Slugs from UC Santa Cruz (1-5), 95-39, in McKeon Pavilion on Sunday. Sophomore Chase Poole (Austin, TX) led all scorers with 16 points as he went 6-for-7 from the field, including 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The Gaels had five players record double-digits in scoring. Besides Poole's 16, senior Ross Benson (Everett, WA) and sophomore Paul Marigney (Oakland, CA) added 14 points. Senior Ethnie Stubbs (Freeport, Bahamas) had 12 points to go along with his six rebounds and senior Teohn Conner (Ferriday, LA) dropped in 10 points. Junior Anthony Woodards (Richmond, CA) had a solid all around performance recording five points, a game high eight rebounds, four steals, and two assists.
Saint Mary's started the game with a 9-0 run as the Gaels smothered the Santa Cruz offense. The Banana Slugs battled back to bring the game within six points at the 10:43 minute mark and that would be the closest UCSC would get to the hot shooting Gaels. The Gaels rallied up another run as they outscored UCSC 27-5 in the final ten minutes of the first half to give SMC a 30-point lead at the break.
In the second half the Gaels beefed up their shooting percentage as they shot a team combined 71 percent from the field. SMC would put in a few good runs in the second half, including an 8-0 run to end the game. Every Gael that suited up this evening saw action as well as scored.
Santa Cruz's Jesse Senestraro finished with 15 points, going 7-for-8 from the floor. The Banana Slugs shot 30 percent from the floor to the Gaels 57 percent while the Gaels out-rebounded UC Santa Cruz 42-19.
This 56-point margin of victory ties the school record set in 1993 when the Gaels defeated Sonoma State 118-62.
The Gaels will continue their season as they host Loyola-Chicago (3-3) on Tuesday, December 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m in McKeon Pavilion.
