SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior right-handed pitcher Sandra Durazo scattered four hits in seven innings of work as the Aztec softball team (26-16) defeated Saint Mary's (20-23) 1-0, before the Gaels came back to win the second contest, 3-2, in nine innings Wednesday afternoon at SDSU Field.
Durazo recorded her sixth shutout of the season by striking out seven batters and issuing no walks in the opener of the twinbill. Saint Mary's Jennifer Eaton matched Durazo's effort, allowing just three hits and one unearned runs in six innings of work.
The Aztecs pushed the game's lone run across in the sixth inning. Junior right fielder Tiffany Goudy led off the inning with a double to right-center field. Freshman center fielder Janna Kovensky reached on an error, advancing Goudy to third. After Goudy was picked-off of third base, and Kovensky reached third base on a sacrifice fly, she scored on a wild pitch.
In the second game, Michelle Hanifin scored on a Talaya Turner sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning to give Saint Mary's a 3-2 victory in extra innings. Eaton, pitched the final two and two-thirds innings without allowing a hit to pick up the victory. Durazo, who pitched her second complete game of the day, picked up the loss.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Friday, April 13, when they finish up their road trip at UC Riverside. First pith of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
