Laramie, WY - The Saint Mary's volleyball team (2-6) suffered a 3-2 loss to the University of Wyoming Cowgirls (5-3) on Saturday night in front of 327 fans. The Cowgirls stole the decisive game five away from the Gaels 15-12.
Statistically the match was evenly played as Saint Mary's posted a .142 hitting percentage to Wyoming's .182. Saint Mary's tallied 76 digs to the Cowgirls 82 and the Gaels recorded 11 team blocks to UW's 13. The Gaels were a stronger serving team recording 13 aces to the Cowgirls six.
Pacing the Gaels was senior setter Brooke Lowry, who originally attended University of Wyoming before transfering to Moraga. Lowry finished with a double-double recording 51 assists, 19 digs, and three service aces. Senior Meagan Smith was the only other Gael to record a double-double, finishing with 11 kills, and 11 digs. Senior Carla Jo Vandenbark, who also attended Wyoming, finished with 12 kills, four digs, seven blocks, and a .308 hitting percentage.
Leading the way for the Cowgirls was outside hitter Michele Rauter who finished with 27 kills and a .411 hitting percentage. Recording double-doubles for Wyoming were Amy Doman with 62 assists and 12 digs as well as Sara Maytorena who recorded 11 kills, and 16 digs.
Saint Mary's will return to action to begin conference play on Friday, September 28th, versus the University of San Francisco. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:05 pm.
