Reno, NV - The Saint Mary's College women's volleyball team (1-2) lost to the University of Nevada (3-1) in three straight games on Friday in the open match of the Nevada Tournament. Individual scores for the match were 30-14, 30-22, and 30-27.
For the Gaels, Meagan Smith had a strong night with a .346 hitting percentage. Smith tallied double digit in kills for the third straight match with 10 kills. Junior outside hitter Rachel Avilla led the Gaels with 12 kills while adding eight digs. Setter Brooke Lowry posted a double-double with 26 assists and a match-high 14 digs.
The Wolfpack was led by Michelle More who tallied a match-high 17 kills on 29 attempts for a .586 hitting percentage. Suzanne Stonebarger posted a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs. Nevada setter, Jill Couwenhoven added 50 assists to lead the Wolfpack to victory.
Nevada was dominant in the match, posting a .409 hitting percentage against the Gaels and tallied 57 kills in the match as a team. Saint Mary's totaled 35 kills with a .190 hitting percentage. Nevada was strong at the net with nine total blocks compared to the 1.5 by Saint Mary's.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, September 8 when it faces CS Fullerton at 10:00 a.m. The Gaels will then square off against Weber State at 5:00 p.m. to close the Nevada Tournament. CS Fullerton defeated Weber State in five games on Friday.
