Men's Basketball Falls to San Francisco, 63-46

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's basketball team (5-11/ 0-3 WCC) shot just 25 percent from the floor in their loss to the San Francisco Dons (7-9/ 2-1 WCC) at McKeon Pavilion on Wednesday. Leading the way for the Gaels was sophomore Paul Marigney (Oakland, CA) who finished with a team-high 12 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal.

San Francisco's Hondre Brewer and Darrell Tucker quickly made their presence felt as the Dons jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. The Gaels would tie the score at 12 after a Ross Benson (Everett, WA) put back. SMC would get their first lead of the game after a layup by Ethnie Stubbs (Freeport, Bahamas), which would bring the score to 16-14. The Dons would then go on a 7-3 run in the next six minutes to take the lead, 21-19, at the break.

In the second half the Dons would force the ball down low to Tucker and watch him got to work as they would put together a 12-4 run. The Gaels would struggle offensively due to the presence of Brewer who finished the night with seven blocks. USF would take advantage of the Gaels poor shooting as they increased their lead by as much as 22 late in the second half. The Gaels would finish the game with a 13-6 run to bring the score within 17 at the buzzer.

San Francisco's Tucker led all scorers with 25 points, going 9-for-15 from the floor. He also added a game-high 12 rebounds. SMC's Samuel Saint-Jean (Versailes, France) and Stubbs finished with nine points. As a team the Gaels shot 25 percent, a season low, to the Dons 49 percent. SMC shot just 7.7 percent from behind the arc, going 1-for 13. The Gaels were out-rebounded by the Dons 48-28.

The Gaels will finish up their second game with the Dons on Saturday, January 19. This game will begin at 1:00 p.m at War Memorial Gymnasium in San Francisco, CA. This game will also be aired on KRON-TV, channel 4.
