Portland, OR - The Saint Mary's men's basketball team (5-13/ 0-5 WCC) couldn't finish in it's loss to the Portland Pilots (5-14/ 1-4 WCC) in front of 955 fans at the Chiles Center. Chase Poole (Austin, TX) led the Gaels with 18 points and added six rebounds and two steals.
The Gaels came out flat, missing numerous uncontested lay ups and finding themselves down 12-4 four minutes in. The Gaels and Pilots would exchange baskets for most of the first half until the Pilots went on a 13-3 run to take a 14-point lead. The Gaels would cut the lead to eight as the Pilots led 41-33 at the break. The Gaels shot 38.7 percent from the floor and 12.5 percent from behind the arc to the Pilots 63.6 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from long range.
In the second half the Gaels would slowly come back cutting the Pilots lead to six after a jumper by Paul Marigney (Oakland, CA) at the 10:47 minute mark. Portland would go on a short 8-2 run to take their lead back to 12. The Gaels would retaliate with a 8-0 run of their own bringing SMC within four. But that would be the closest the Gaels could come, as the Pilots would finish the game with free throws and fast breaks.
Besides Poole's 18, Marigney finished with a double-double adding 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Ethnie Stubbs (Freeport, Bahamas) finished with 16 points and three steals. Anthony Woodards (Richmond, CA) had a career high four assists and also added five points and three rebounds. Leading the way for the Pilots was Adam Quick who finished with 18 points and four assists.
As a team the Gaels shot 39 percent from the floor, 25 percent from behind the arc and 70.4 percent from the charity stripe. The Pilots finished with 51.1 percent from the field, 53.8 percent from long range and a team record 95.5 percent from the free throw line.
The Gaels will continue West Coast Conference action as they travel to Spokane to play 16th-ranked Gonzaga on Saturday the 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
