Spokane, WA- The Saint Mary's men's basketball team (5-14/ 0-6 WCC) fell short in it's loss to the 16th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs (18-3/ 5-1 WCC) on Saturday in front of 4,000 fans. Leading the way for the Gaels was sophomore Paul Marigney (Oakland, CA), who finished with 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal.
In the first half the Bulldogs came out hot to take a 12-0 lead. The Gaels seemed intimidated in The Kennel as the 'Zags took led by as much as 26 in the first. SMC was only able to produce six field goals, shooting 22 percent from the field and going 0-7 from behind the arc. At the end of the first the Bulldogs took a commanding 43-17 lead.
The tides quickly changed in the second half as the Gaels went on a 11-4 run. The Gaels would continue to pressure the offense of Gonzaga, allowing just five field goals in the second half. But it was the `Zags 17-for-19 free throw shooting that kept GU ahead. SMC would shoot the ball much better in the second half, going 13-of-29 from the field and 4-of-10 from long range. The Gaels allowed just one field goal in the final 11 minutes, outscoring the `Zags 35-27 in the second to come within 18 at the buzzer.
Dan Dickau was the games top scorer as he finished with 19 points, going 5-for-7 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. SMC's Ethnie Stubbs (Freeport, Bahamas), Chase Poole (Austin, TX) and GU's Cory Violette finished with a game-high 8 rebounds. Also scoring in double-figures for the Gaels was Anthony Woodards (Richmond, CA), who ended the night with 11 points.
As a team the Gaels shot 33.9 percent from the field, 23.5 percent from long range and 62.5 percent from the free throw line. GU finished with 50 percent from the floor, 30 percent from behind the arc and 74.4 percent from the charity stripe.
The Gaels will continue West Coast Conference action when they host the Santa Clara Broncos on Friday, February 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion.
