Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's basketball team added Colorado State transfer Jonathan Sanders (Denver, CO) to its program beginning in the Spring. Sanders is expected to be eligible to play for the Gaels in December of 2002.
In high school at Belleview Christian in Denver, Colorado, the 6-7 guard was rated as one of the top 100 prospects nationally by several recruiting services. Sanders was named second-team all-state as a freshman and garnered first-team all-state honors for the following three years. He was named Colorado's player of the year as a junior and senior. He helped lead his team to back-to-back Class IA state titles in 1999 and 2000. Sanders, who averaged 20 points, nearly 10 rebounds and 10 assists as a senior, holds school records for career and single-season scoring, rebounds and assists. As a freshman at Colorado State, Sanders played in 27-of-28 games, averaging eight minutes per contest.
"Jonathan Sanders is a nice sized perimeter player who has a good feel for the game," Head Coach Randy Bennett explained. "He's a great person on and off the court which will make him a good addition to our basketball program. He can play anywhere from the point guard position to the forward spot, and he is a high-level passer."
Bennett believes that having Sanders now will help his progress and will give him a good feel for the program come next year, when he is available to begin play.
