Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team fell to 5-9 with a 33-35, 12-30, 21-30 loss to UC Irvine (11-6) in a non-conference match tonight in Crawford Hall.
Game one was close with four lead changes. Saint Mary's was able to tie the game at 28-28 and would match UCI point for point. Unfortunately, the Anteaters were able to pull it out, thanks to a game-ending block by Rebecca Larsen and Chanda McLeod.
In game 2 the Anteaters jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and widened the deficit to 11-0 before the Gaels were able to record their first point. The Anteaters played well and won the game by 18.
In game three it was the Gaels who would take the early lead, but the Anteaters would rally back, taking the lead at 9-8. The Gaels fought hard, closing the gap to within one point several times, but eventually dropped the game by nine points.
Leading the Gaels was Lindsey Bogason with 14 kills and five digs. Jill Parmele hit .455 with 11 kills and only one error in 22 attempts. Brooke Lowry assisted 29 kills in the match. Kaui Salzman chipped in with 11 digs.
The Anteaters were lead by Kelly Wing who had a match-high 18 kills. McLeod contributed with 11 kills and a team-high 12 digs. Ashlie Hain had 49 assists in the win.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday, October 12 when they play San Diego in Jenny Craig Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
