Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (5-11/2-3 WCC) defeated the University of Portland (12-9/1-5 WCC), 3-1 on Saturday night. Individual game scores were 26-30, 30-28, 30-24, and 30-23.
Game one was close, with the score tied 8-8 after the first sixteen points. Then, Portland managed to create some space by rattling off a number of points and jumping out to a commanding 20-13 lead. However, the Gaels battled back to within two points, trailing 25-27. Unfortunately, Saint Mary's could not quite close it out, and eventually dropped the game by four points.
Game two began with Saint Mary's sprinting out to an 18-10 advantage. Portland then posted 15 kills to the Gaels' 5, clawing its way back into the game and tying the score at 28. A Saint Mary's time out allowed the Gaels to regroup and provided them with the energy they needed to win the game. After the time out, Jill Parmele came out refreshed and posted her most energetic kill of the night, crushing the Pilot's momentum and leading Saint Mary's to a 2-point, game 2, victory.
Just like the two before it, game three was a battle, as the lead changed hands four times, with Saint Mary's taking the final lead at 21-20. The Gaels continued to thrive in the game forcing Portland to commit five errors in the game's final 12 points. Saint Mary's won the game by a margin of six.
After breaking a 12-12 tie in game four, Saint Mary's absolutely refused to relinquish its lead. Parmele, who posted the momentum-changing kill in game two, ended the fourth game with her 14th kill of the night.
The Gales were led by Brooke Lowry who posted a double-double with 48 assists and 16 digs, and Jill Parmele who posted 14 kills and four digs. Rachel Avilla contributed for the Gaels, with 10 kills, seven digs and four block assists. Saint Mary's also received help from Lindsey Bogason, who posted 14 kills and nine digs in the win. Kaui Salzman chipped in with 13 digs.
Portland was led by Sheena Surplus, who posted a match-high 52 assists and 14 digs. Heather Denison and Monique Kettler posted 19 and 18 kills, respectively.
The Gaels will return to action on Tuesday, October 22 when they play California at 7:05 p.m. in McKeon Pavilion.
