Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (5-7, 1-1) fell to the #15-ranked Santa Clara Broncos (13-2, 2-0), 3-1. Individual game scores were 30-23, 30-25, 20-30, and 30-26.
Game one belonged to Santa Clara, as the Broncos took an early 1-0 lead and never looked back. Santa Clara led by as many as 10, and eventually won the game by seven points. In game two Saint Mary's took control and built a 21-16 lead, but the Broncos battled back, winning the game by five points.
Game three was kept close, as both teams fought hard for the lead. Saint Mary's got ahead 7-4, thanks to a service ace by Lindsey Bogason. Santa Clara then clawed its way back, taking a one-point lead (12-11) on an attack error by Jill Parmele. However, two straight Bronco errors allowed Saint Mary's to recapture a 14-12 lead, which the Gaels would never relinquish. The Gaels eventually won the game 30-20.
In the end, Santa Clara was able to shake off the ten-point loss, winning the final game by a margin of four.
The Gaels were led by Lindsey Bogason who posted 17 kills and 10 digs. Jill Parmele registered 11 kills in the match, most of which came courtesy of Brooke Lowry who finished the evening with 48 of her teams 49 assists. Kaui Salzman also contributed with a team-high 11 digs.
Junior Becky Potter led the way for the Broncos, posting a career-high 30 kills to go along with her match-high 19 digs.
The Gaels will play at home for the first time in over a month, hosting San Jose State on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion. On Friday, October 11 the Gaels will play UC Irvine in Crawford Hall Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 12 the Gaels return to WCC play, taking on the University of San Diego in Jenny Craig Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
