Women's Volleyball Defeats USF, 3-1

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team defeated the University of San Francisco, 3-1, for the second time this season. Individual game scores were 28-30, 30-22, 30-27, and 30-16. With the win the Gaels improved to 6-15 overall and 3-6 in West Coast Conference play. The Lady Dons fell to 4-20 overall and 0-8 in the WCC.

Judging by the first game, one might have expected a different outcome for the match as the Gaels got off to a sluggish start, trailing throughout the majority of the game. However, the Gaels changed the tempo in game two and forced USF to make three errors, allowing Saint Mary's to grab hold of a 3-0 lead. The Gaels spent the remainder of game two extending their lead and eventually won by a seven-point margin.

The Gaels struck first in game three, only this time the Lady Dons stayed close behind. The two teams battled back and forth for the lead, but it was Saint Mary's that would take the final lead of the game, after a service ace by Erin Gravert gave the Gaels a 7-6 advantage. The Lady Dons made several efforts to recapture the lead, the last of which was a service ace by Kristina Bognar cut the Gaels' lead to a two point 29-27 margin. However, Saint Mary's kept its poise and ended the game on a Jill Parmele kill.

Game four belonged to Saint Mary's the entire way. The Gaels jumped out to an 8-4 lead, posting two service aces and four kills on the opening run. From that point on, the Gaels continued to extend on their lead, defeating the Lady Dons by 14 points in the final game and winning the match 3-1.

Leading the Gaels was Lindsey Bogason who posted 19 kills, hitting .304 in the match, while also scoring 11 block assists and nine digs. Stacey O'Connor posted a match-high 12 block assists and also hit a match-high .467, posting eight kills in fifteen attempts while committing only one error. Brooke Lowry posted a double-double with a match-high 45 assists and a team-high 16 digs. Jill Parmele contributed 10 kills for the Gaels while Kaui Salzman, Rachel Avilla and Meg Hauser posted 14, 11, and 11 digs, respectively. Avilla also added nine kills in the match.

The Lady Dons were led by Brittanie Budinger who posted a match-high 20 kills and 16 digs. Caroline Skacel posted a match-high 18 digs and 12 kills, while Kristina Bognar contributed 41 assists.

The Gaels will return to action on Tuesday, November 5 when they play Sacramento State in Hornet Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
