Gaels Fall to WCC Champions, #8 Pepperdine, 3-0

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team fell to #8 Pepperdine, 3-0. Individual game scores were 30-23, 31-29, and 30-18. The Gaels finished the season 9-18 overall and 6-8 in West Coast Conference action. Pepperdine captured the WCC championship, going an undefeated 14-0 in the WCC and posting a 23-6 overall record.

The Gaels seemed a little sluggish at the start of game one, digging themselves into an 16-6 deficit due to a number of attack errors. But just as they have done all year, the Gaels adjusted quickly and remained confident in themselves. Saint Mary's managed to cut Pepperdine's lead to just six, but was unable to makeup all of the ground they had lost earlier in the game. Pepperdine eventually took the game by a seven-point margin.

In game two, the Gaels started off much more relaxed, and seemed quite confident that they could play with #8 Pepperdine. The Gaels played exceptionally well, out hitting the Waves .205 to .174. Both teams fought hard, forcing 22 tie scores and eight lead changes. Saint Mary's took a 27-25 advantage late in the game, but Pepperdine fought back and took a one-point 29-28 lead. Lindsey Bogason and Brooke Lowry connected on the next point, tying the game at 29. Unfortunately, for the Gaels, Pepperdine closed the game out with two final kills.

In the end, the Waves were able to close out the match, winning the final game by a 12 point-margin.

Gael seniors Brooke Lowry, Rachel Avilla and Meg Hauser played for the final time as Saint Mary's Gaels. All three seniors left everything they had on the floor in their final night, leading their team by example and playing with heart and courage. Lowry played the majority of the match with an eye that was swelling shut, due to a hard hit Pepperdine attack. Despite the injury, the senior setter battled on, posting 35 assists and six digs in her final appearance as a Gael. Rachel Avilla swung her heart out, posting a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while senior Meg Hauser was all over the floor in her final appearance, posting 10 digs. Lindsey Bogason posted a team-high 13 kills and Kaui Salzman tallied a team-best 12 digs. Stacey O'Connor chalked-up seven block assists.

The Waves were led by Lyndsey Hache', who posted 14 kills with an incredible .650 hitting percentage. Katie Wilkins tallied 11 kills and nine digs, while Paola Rodriguez dished out 38 assists and 11 digs. Christina Hinds posted a match-high 16 digs.
