
Men's Basketball Falls to Eastern Washington 88-80

Cheney, WA - Adam Caporn tallied career-highs with 19 points and eight assists to pace the Saint Mary's men's basketball team, which fell to the Eastern Washington Eagles 88-80 on Tuesday night from Reese Court in Cheney, Washington. With the loss Saint Mary's falls to 1-1 on the season and Eastern Washington moves to 3-1 overall.
Saint Mary's held an 8-4 lead after Tyler Herr hit a three-pointer three-and-a-half minutes into the contest, but a 10-0 Eastern Washington run put the Eagles ahead 14-8 with 14:52 remaining in the first half. Eastern would extend its first half lead to 12 points at 28-16 at the 6:20 mark and then obtain its largest lead of the half at 37-24 with 2:37 remaining until the intermission. A lay in by Daniel Kickert with 57 seconds remaining in the half would put the Gaels down 38-28 at the half.
Adam Caporn led SMC at the half with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting. Kickert added six points and Herr added five points in the half. The Gaels were 11-of-22 from the floor in the half and Eastern Washington shot 60.7 percent (17-28) from the floor in the first session.
Eastern Washington extended its lead to 16 points (57-41) at the 14:25 mark but two quick baskets, the second a three by Caporn cut the lead to 11 points. Saint Mary's and EWU would continue to exchange baskets throughout most of the half. The Gaels would cut the Eagles lead to 77-70 with 1:26 remaining on two free throws by Frederic Adjiwanao. After and Eagles basketball, Caporn connected from long range to get SMC within six with a minute remaining.
With less than a minute remaining, Scott O'Hara's three-pointer would cut the Eagles' lead to 81-76, but that would be as close as the Gaels would get. Eastern would convert 11-of-12 free throw attempts in the final minute of the game to preserve the win.
Caporn's finished the game going 8-of-12 from the field and connected on 3-of-4 shots from three-point land. Chase Poole was one of four Gaels in double figures with 15 points. Also in double figures for the Gaels was Scott O'Hara who had a career-high 13 points and Tyler Herr with 11.
As a team the Gaels shot 53.6 percent (30-56) from the floor and 53.8 percent (7-13) from three-point range for the game. However, EWU out did SMC posting a 58.8 percent (30-51) mark from the floor while shooting 42.9 percent (3-7) from long range. The Gaels outrebounded the Eagles 32-23 but EWU was 25-for-33 from the free throw line while SMC was 13-for-18 from the line.
Eastern's Alvin Snow scored a game-high 21 points and Chris Hester chipped in with 20 points as he converted 9-of-11 shots from the floor. Brendon Merritt added 15 points after making 11-of-13 shots from the free throw line. Danny Pariseau was the fourth Eagle in double figures with 10 points.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday when the open the McCaffery Classic Invitational in Fresno, CA against Sam Houston State. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 PM in Fresno State's Selland Arena.
