Men's Basketball Stomps San Jose State, 94-62

Dec. 4, 2002

Final Stats

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's basketball team (3-2) cruised past the San Jose State Spartans (2-2), 94-62, on Wednesday, December 4 in McKeon Pavilion. Paving the way offensively for the Gaels was Chase Poole (Austin, TX), who finished with 22 points after going 9-for-12 from the field.

San Jose State would take the lead at 2-0 as the game began and that would be the only lead the Spartans would have all game. The Gaels would then go on a 21-2 run leading into the 12:33 mark. SMC continued to dominate behind the shooting of Daniel Kickert (Melbourne, Australia), Tyler Herr (Gilbert, AZ) and Poole. The three combined for 25 points at the end of the first half.

At the end of the first half with the Gaels leading 56-18, SMC shot 72.7 percent from the floor, 100.0 percent from beyond the arc and 89.5 percent from the charity stripe.

In the second half the Spartans began to slowly inch their way back into the game. Fortunately for Gael fans, that wasn't going to happen. The Gaels would take their largest lead of the game at the 12:20 minute mark, a 42-point advantage. Both teams would trade baskets as the Gaels would walk away with a 32-point margin of victory.

This is the Gaels second 30+ margin of victory as the Gaels also walloped Holy Names by 45 points earlier in the season. This is the biggest margin of victory against a Division I opponent since the Gaels defeated Youngstown State, 88-53, on December 12, 1998.

In addition to Poole's 22-points, the Gaels' Herr finished with 20 points, Kickert recorded 17 points and Ross Benson (Everett, WA) and Scott O'Hara (Concord, CA) tallied 10 points.

The Gaels will continue non-conference action when they host the Portland State Vikings on Saturday, December 7. This game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:05 PM.
