Softball Defeated by San Jose State

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (3-8) fell to San Jose State in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 16 at Cottrell Field. The Spartans defeated the Gaels 1-0 in game one and 3-0 in game two.

In the first game, the Spartans jumped to an early lead at the top of the first inning off of two Saint Mary's errors. Pitchers Jennifer Eaton (Palo Cedro, CA) and Brianne Ferguson battled on the mound, each giving up only three hits. The Spartans early lead was enough for Ferguson to get the win. Tiffany Redding (Placerville, CA) and Claudia Williams (Rodeo, CA) each went 1-for-3, while freshman Laura Davis (Reno, NV) went 1-for-2 for the Gaels. Eaton finished the game with three strikeouts, one walk, and three hits. She falls to 1-4 on the season.

In their second game of the day, the Gaels lost to the Spartans 3-0. Falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, the Gaels were unable to come frombehind. SMC managed managed only two hits on the game. Williams led off the top of the fifth inning with a standup triple, but was stranded as the Gaels were unable to get a hit. Williams was 1-for-3 in the game.

Pitcher Sara Wiedlin (San Jose, CA) pitched a complete game for the Gaels, striking out three, walking three, and allowing eight hits. Wiedlin is now 1-4 on the season.

Pitcher Carol Forbes got the win for the Spartans. Forbes recorded three strikeouts, one walk, and two hits. Becca Baldridge was the top hitter for the Spartans, going 3-for-3.

On Wednesday, February 20, the Gaels will travel to take on the Univeristy of Pacific Tiger. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The Gaels will return to Cottrell Field to take on Hayward State on Saturday, February 23. Game time of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
