Softball Splits With Cal State Hayward

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's Softball team (4-11) split with the California State University at Hayward Pioneers in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 23. The Gaels lost the first game 1-0 and then won the second game 9-0 in five innings.

In the first game, pitcher Jennifer Eaton (Palo Cedro, CA) dominated on the mound with seven strikeouts, one walk, and two hits against the Pioneers. Eatons' preformance was not enough for the win, as the Pioneers took advantage of a Gael error and scored one run at the top of the fifth inning. Eaton falls to 1-6 on the season.

Freshman Lauren Capoccia (Sierra Madre, CA) led the Gaels at the plate going 2-for-3, with one bunt and a single down the right field line.

In the second game, the Gaels shutout the Pioneers in five innings, 9-0. The Gaels took an early lead in the first inning off of a Laura Connors (Las Vegas, NV) single. Freshman Claudia Williams (Rodeo, CA) led off the bottom of the second inning with a stand-up double, while Jordann Bass (Sammamish, WA) and Laura Davis (Reno, NV) each added RBI singles. Senior Kami Gray (Mt. Shasta, CA) was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2, while junior Tiffany Redding (Placerville, CA) went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Sophomore Sara Wiedlin (San Jose, CA) pitched 4.1 innings for the Gaels with five strikeouts, one hit, and one walk. With the win, Wiedlin improves to 2-5 on the season.

The Gaels will travel to Cal Poly on Sunday, March 3. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon. Saint Mary's will return home on Tuesday, March 5 to take on Boston University at 3:00 PM.
