Final Stats
Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (7-9) couldn't record any runs as the Nevada Wolf Pack (9-10) won 12-0 on Tuesday, March 12 at Louis Gusto Field. Jason Waugh and Brett Wayne were the only Gaels to get a hit as they both finished 1-for-3.
Nevada came out swinging as lead-off hitter Mike Haas racked a double down the right field line. After a fly out to center field, Haas advanced to third, then scored on a Jeff Tolotti ground out. After the first inning the Wolf Pack led 1-0.
In the second the Wolf Pack would add three more runs to give pitcher James Holcomb some breathing room. Carlos Madrid would score Josh Laidlaw on a single after Laidlaw reached base on a double to left field. Catcher Craig Markel advanced to second on the hit after he reached base on a walk. Markel would eventually score after a couple of wild pitches from pitcher Matt Dolen. Haas then singled to score Madrid and give Nevada a 4-0 lead.
Nevada would score two more runs in the fourth after Matt Maguire doubled to left and Carlos Madrid cleared the bases with a homerun to left field. The score now stood at 6-0, Nevada.
In the seventh inning the Wolf Pack did most of their damage on the day, scoring five runs. Most of Nevada's runs came from singles and wild pitches as the Gaels went through three pitchers in the top half of the inning, which included John Guthrie, Tom Carroll and Dane Dobrinich. Dobrinich mowed down two batters in his relief but not until the Wolf Pack increased their advantage to 11-0.
Nevada would score one more in the top half of the ninth as Curtis Wickwire belted his second homerun of the season off of Bryan Zahn.
The Gaels will begin conference action this weekend as they travel to Santa Clara to play the Broncos on Friday, March 15. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Buck Shaw Stadium.
