Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (6-18) split a doubleheader with the Univeristy of Virginia (18-8) on Wednesday, March 13. The The Gaels were shutout in the first game by the Cavaliers as they lost 2-0 and then won the second game 4-1.
In the first game, pitchers Jordan Larsen and Joanna Barstad were locked in a scoreless battle through four innings. Barstad started off the inning for the Cavaliers with a single down the third base line. Heather Field's single scored the first run of the game. In the seventh inning, back-to-back doubles by Field and Kristen Dennis scored the Cavaliers final run of the game. Field finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate, with one RBI. Larsen completed the game for the Gaels, allowing two runs on seven hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. She falls to 2-4 on the season.
Freshmen Staci Hamaguchi and Lauren Capoccia each went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Gaels.
In the second game, the Gaels took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kami Gray singled to the Cavaliers' shortstop, stole second, and then advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Laura Connors singled to left field to put the Gaels ahead 1-0. Claudia Williams doubled to right field, while Connors advanced to third. Capoccia singled to right field as the Gaels improved their lead to 2-0.
In the top of the third inning Ruby Rojas hit a homerun to right field to cut the Gaels' lead to 2-1. The Gaels responded in the bottom of the inning as Connors and Williams each hit RBI-singles to improve the lead to 4-1.
Kristen Dennis lead the Cavaliers at the plate as she went 2-for-3. Rojas went 1-for-2, with one RBI.
Jennifer Eaton pitched the complete game for the Gaels, allowing only five hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. Eaton improves her record to 2-9.
The Gaels will travel to Sacramento for the Capitol Classic Softball Tournament on Thursday, March 14 to Sunday, March 17. The Gaels are scheduled to take on Wisconsin, Long Island, Utah State, and Nebraska during the 15-team tournament.
