Baseball Loses Close One to Cal

Berkeley, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (8-11) lost to the California Golden Bears (16-11), 5-3, in a non-conference battle at Evans Diamond on Wednesday, March 20. Leading the way for the Gaels was Mark Teahen who finished 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and one run.

The Golden Bears got off to an early 1-0 lead after David Nicholson and David Weiner started the game off with back-to-back singles off starter Eric Bowden. Conor Jackson then hit into a double play, which would score Nicholson, giving the Bears the advantage.

In the top of the third inning the Gaels tied up the score at one when Mark Teahen began the rally with a single up the middle. Tim Spooner then advanced Teahen after he singled to left. John Engers followed with a single to score spooner, bringing the score to 1-1.

In the bottom of the third the Bears retook the lead when Nicholson hit his second homerun of the season. His solo homerun gave the Bears a 2-1 lead going into the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the inning the Gaels tied it up, started off by a Brett Wayne single up the middle. Center fielder Jason Waugh then followed with a single of his own to the right side. Teahen then scored Wayne as he singled to right field, tying the score at two apiece.

Cal then added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jeff Dragicevich hit his second homerun on the season to give the Bears a 3-2 advantage. Nicholson then doubled for his second hit of the day but was later nailed at third base trying to steal. Jackson followed with a walk and Conor White advanced him after a single to center field. Brian Horwitz would then single to right, scoring Jackson to give the Bears a 4-2 lead at the end of the fifth.

Cal would later add to the damage in the bottom of the eighth inning. After SMC's Bryan Zahn recorded two quick outs he gave up back-to-back walk's. Jackson would then single to score Nicholson and extend their lead to 5-2.

In the top of the ninth Spooner belted his first homerun of the season to bring the Gaels within two runs, but it proved to be too little, too late.

Middle reliever Matt Dolen picked up the loss on the day after throwing 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. His record now moves to 1-3 on the season.

The Gaels will continue the conference season when they host the Pepperdine Waves on Friday, March 22 to begin a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Louis Gusto Field.
