Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (9-24) split a doubleheader with San Diego State University (22-15-1) on Sunday, March 24. Claudia Williams led the Gaels at the plate in both games, combining for 4-for-6 with four RBI, one walk, and one double.
In the first game the Aztecs beat the Gaels 4-2. The Aztecs jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and then improved their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning to secure the win. The Aztecs combined for seven hits off of pitcher Jordan Larsen as she pitched the complete game for the Gaels. Allowing four runs and two walks, Larsen falls to 4-7 on the season.
The Gaels combined for six hits off of the Aztec pitching staff, but manganed only two runs in the top of the fourth inning off of the bat of Williams as she singled down the right field line off of pitcher Korin Gregory. Williams went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Kami Gray went 2-for-3.
In the second game the Gaels combined for 13 hits in the 6-2 win over SDSU. The Gaels took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of three hits and one defensive error. The Aztecs responsed in the same inning with two runs of their own as they combined for two runs on three hits.
The Gaels added one run in the top of the fifth inning and secured their lead in the top of the seventh inning with three more runs. Tiffany Redding hit her first triple of the season as she completed the game 3-for-4 at the plate. Sarah Vigna went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Williams went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one walk, and one double.
Jennifer Eaton earned her third win of the season as she pitched the complete game for the Gaels. Eaton allowed one walk with two runs on eight hits. She is now 3-12 on the season.
The Gaels will continue action on Monday, March 25 as they will visit University of San Diego for a doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
