Final Stats

Spokane, WA - Brent Dayton pitched eight innings of one-run relief Thursday afternoon as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (13-13, 4-3 WCC) pulled off a come from behind 11-4 win over Saint Mary's College (8-14, 1-3). The two teams combined for seven home runs during a windy day at August/A.R.T. Stadium.

The Gaels took advantage of the blustery conditions in the first inning scoring three runs against Gonzaga starter Kemp Quackenbush. After Jason Waugh drew a lead off walk, Mark Teahen hit a two-run home run to centerfield to stake the Gaels to a 2-0 lead. Brian Houle followed with a solo shot before Quackenbush could settle down and get out of the inning.

Dayton would enter the contest for the Bulldogs in the top of the second inning and work the remainder of the game allowing only a Tim Spooner home run in the third. Dayton (1-2) struck out eight batters while scattering six hits for his first win of the season.

Gonzaga chipped away at the Saint Mary's lead with single runs in the second and third. Brian Munhall homered to left in the second while Jeff Culpepper drove home Kevin Richardson in the third with an RBI single up the middle.

The Bulldogs would tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth as Eric Rodland hit a two-run homer to left. The Bulldogs added three more runs against Gaels starter Eric Bowden (2-3) in the fifth inning and chased him from the game with three runs in the sixth. Pinch hitter Sam Hess drove home two runs in the fifth with a single to left while Culpepper hit a three-run home run in the sixth. Rodland would connect for a solo shot in the seventh to cap off Gonzaga's scoring.

Rodland finished the day 4-for-5 with 4 RBI while Munhall finished with three hits. Culpepper also added 4 RBI for the Zags with a 2-for-4 afternoon. Teahen, Houle, Spooner and Michael Harris all finished with two hits to lead Saint Mary's.

The two teams will resume their West Coast Conference series on Friday with a 2 p.m. start at August/A.R.T. Stadium.
