March 30, 2002

Final Stats

Spokane, WA - Gonzaga (14-14, 5-4 WCC) won its first home West Coast Conference series with an 11-7 victory over Saint Mary's College (9-15, 2-4 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at August/A.R.T. Stadium. Gonzaga scored 11 runs in all three weekend games winning on Thursday and Saturday, while the Gaels won Friday's contest.

Saint Mary's scored in the opening inning for the third consecutive day as Brian Houle drove home Mark Teahen with a single to left. Teahen had reached base on a double to left. Gonzaga quickly erased the deficit as Nate Gold hit his fourth home run of the weekend, a two-run shot to left. Kevin Richardson scored on Gold's home run after driving home the Bulldogs first run with a double to left center.

Gonzaga tacked on three more runs in the third inning as Brian Munhall, Sam Hess and Garth Blumberg all accounted for RBI singles. Jason Waugh's three-run homer to left center in the fifth closed the Gonzaga lead to 6-4. Waugh added two more RBI in the sixth as he doubled down the left field line to tie the game. Waugh would come around to score the go ahead run as Teahen singled to center.

The Bulldogs again used the long ball to respond as Richardson hit a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth against Saint Mary's starter Kevin Trochez (2-3). A Grant Zurmely ground out would score Garth Blumberg for Gonzaga's tenth run while Gold would score on a double play in the eighth to wrap up the Bulldogs offensive afternoon.

Ed Clelland (3-2) picked up the win pitching 2.2 innings of relief while Eric Everson worked 1.1 innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Waugh and Teahen each collected three hits for Saint Mary's with Waugh driving home five runs. Munhall led Gonzaga going 3-for-4 at the plate while Richardson drove home four runs.

The Gaels will return home to continue West Coast Conference action when they host the Loyola Marymount Lions. First pitch is scheduled for Friday, April 5, at 2:00 p.m. on Louis Gusto Field.
