Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (5-15) dropped a doubleheader to Georgia Tech (15-4) on Wednesday, March 6. The Yellowjackets beat the Gaels 5-1 in the first game and then shutout the Gaels 3-0 in game two.
In the first game, the Yellowjackets jumped to an early lead in the top of the second inning that set the team in motion. With two more runs added in the top of the third and fourth innings, the Yellowjackets solidified their win.
The Gaels collected six hits off of the Yellowjackets pitching staff, as junior Laura Connors and senior Talaya Turner each went 2-for-3 at the plate. In the bottom of the sixth inning, back-to-back singles by Tiffany Redding and Laura Connors, followed by a walk from Claudia Williams loaded the bases for Laura Davis. The Gaels' only run came from the walk by Daivs.
Sophomore Jennifer Eaton pitched the complete game for the Gaels, allowing ten hits and two strikeouts. Eaton falls to 1-8 on the season.
In their second game of the day, the Gaels lost to the Yellowjackets 3-0. Pitchers Jordan Larsen and Erin Voeltz battled on the mound as the game remained scoreless through the first five innings. A RBI single by Lindsay Wood, followed by a two-run single by Jamie Frost was enough for the Yellowjackets win.
Freshmen Lauren Capoccia was the top hitter for the Gaels, as she went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Larsen completed the game with six hits and three walks, with one strikeout. Larsen is now 2-2 on the season.
The Gaels will host UNC-Greensboro on Monday, March 11. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheuled for 1:30 pm at Cottrell Field. On Wednesday, the Gaels will host Virginia for a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm.
