Baseball Falls to the Toreros, 6-5

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (16-18/8-6 WCC) fell to the San Diego Toreros (30-14/12-8 WCC), 6-5, on Saturday, April 20, at Louis Gusto Field in front of 325 spectators. The Gaels Jeff Cunningham went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI.

Both teams began the first inning with a run scored. The Toreros Tony Perez began the inning with a single and later scored after Gaels starting pitcher Kevin Trochez walked three-straight batters. In the bottom of the first, Brian Houle hit a two-out double for the Gaels and would score shortly as Tim Spooner followed with a double to tie the score at one.

The Gaels would take the lead in the bottom of the second when Jason Waugh hit his 12 homerun on the season, this one a two-run homer, which scored catcher Nick Conte.

With a 3-1 Gael lead going into the top of the third, the Toreros would add a run to cut the lead to one. David Bagley led off the inning with a solo homerun to center field, his eleventh on the season, bringing the score to 3-2 SMC.

The Toreros would then score two runs in both the fourth and the sixth inning. S.C. Assael began the fourth with a triple and scored on a Lucas Wennersten single. Tom Caple later scored in the fourth on a Tony Perez single. In the sixth it was Wennersten again who added to his RBI total with a two-run homerun to right field.

After four scoreless innings the Gaels would add two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tim Spooner began the inning with a walk and would later advance after a Mike Harris double. Jeff Cunningham then pinch hit for right fielder Adam Thompson, and would make the most of his opportunity with a double to left center, scoring both Spooner and Harris. After seven innings, USD led 6-5.

A 6-5 score would be how the game finished as the Gaels Matt Dolen and USD's Tom Caple kept both team's scoreless. USD's Sean Warlop received the win to improve his record to 2-1 on the season, Caple recorded his third save of the season after going 2.1 innings. Trochez received his fourth loss on the season after going six innings and giving up six runs on 11 hits.

The same two teams will meet for game-three of the series on Sunday, April 21, at Louis Gusto Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
