Malibu, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team fell to the Pepperdine Waves, 8-3, in the opener of a key West Coast Conference (WCC) series Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The win allowed the Waves (25-28, 13-11) to gain a share of first place in the WCC's Coast Division, tying Saint Mary's (21-23, 13-11) for the top spot. Santa Clara (23-28, 13-12) is a half game behind Pepperdine and Saint Mary's after falling 2-1 to Gonzaga (24-25, 12-13) on Friday in Spokane, Washington.
After Saint Mary's scored a run in the top half of the first inning, Pepperdine rallied for three runs in the bottom half as it scored three times to take a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Cory Brightwell drew a leadoff walk, Sardinha followed with a single to left field and senior catcher Rock Mills tied the score with a base hit to right field that scored Brightwell. Junior center fielder Ed Montague reached on catcher's interference to load the bases and junior designated hitter Ty Harper and sophomore first baseman Chris Kelly hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to make the score 3-1.
The Waves added two runs to make it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by Sardinha. That proved to be enough support for Carroll (2-3), who tied a career-high by pitching 6.2 innings. The Waves' right hander scattered eight hits, allowed three runs, walked five and struck out two. Sophomore right hander Jacob Barrack relieved Carroll with two outs in the seventh inning, the bases loaded and the Waves leading 5-3. He retired second baseman Mike Harris on a ground ball to end the inning and the final 2.1 innings to earn his team-leading fourth save of the season.
The Waves added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Harper and two more in the eighth on leadoff home run by junior second baseman Simon Ferrer and a run-scoring single by Sardinha. Harper had two hits in the game to extend his career and team-leading hitting streak to 17 games. Montague went 0-for-2 and had his career-long 11-game hitting streak snapped.
Pepperdine and Saint Mary's continue their four-game weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
