Final Stats

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's softball team split its two games of the first day of the Western Intercollegiate Softball League (WISL) Tournament. Saint Mary's defeated San Diego 10-6 in its first game, then fell to Loyola Marymount 2-0 in its second game.

In the third game of the day, Saint Mary's held a 4-0 lead over the Toreros before San Diego erupted for a six-run fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Saint Mary's would answer with a six-run outburst in the top of the seventh inning en route to the 10-6 win, improving its tournament record to 3-0. With the loss the Toreros fell to 0-4 in tournament action.

Jordan Larsen earned the win to improve her season record to 8-10. Larsen pitched 2.2 innings of relief allowing two unearned runs on five hits while striking out four batters. Anna Russell, who pitched 2.2 innings in relief, took the loss, giving up six runs, four earned, in the seventh inning.

Four players had multiple hits for the Gaels. Leading the way was Talaya Turner who was 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Jennifer Arnold was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Jordann Bass and Lauren Capoccia were 2-for-4 in the game. San Diego's Jennifer Delpit was 4-for-4, Ashley Miller was 3-for-4 and Hilary McBay was 2-for-4.

The fourth and final game of the day saw Loyola Marymount defeat Saint Mary's 2-0. LMU's starting pitcher Jennifer Heliotes tossed a one-hit, complete game shutout over the Gaels. The only hit for SMC was a one-out single by Kami Gray in the bottom of the first inning. Heliotes, who struck out eight hitters, improved to 19-15 with the win while SMC starting pitcher Sara Wiedlin saw her record fall to 3-8.

Loyola Marymount scored both runs in the top of the fourth inning. After two were out in the inning, Megan Julian singled and scored on Jessica Grassi's double. Grassi would score on an infield single by Christy Cerecedes for the second run. Sami Strinz was 3-for-4 in the game to lead the Lions.

The tournament will continue on Saturday with the first game between Saint Mary's and San Diego starting at 9:00 AM. Saint Mary's will then play LMU at 11:00 AM, followed by Santa Clara and LMU at 1:00 PM. The final game of the day will have San Diego and Santa Clara against each other beginning at 3:00 PM. Saint Mary's and LMU are 3-1 in tournament play and Santa Clara and San Diego are 1-3 in the WISL Tournament.
