Final Stats
Moraga, CA - On the second day of the Western Intercollegiate Softball League (WISL) Tournament, the Saint Mary's softball team (17-36) opened the day with a 3-0 victory over San Diego before dropping a 2-1 decision to Loyola Marymount. Saint Mary's completed the round robin portion of the tournament with a 4-2 record, and will enter the elimination round as the number two seed on Sunday.
In the first game of the day for Saint Mary's, the Gaels scored all three runs in the bottom fifth inning en route to a 3-0 win over the Toreros. After Lauren Capoccia walked with one out and Talaya Turner singled with two outs, Kami Gray's double to right field scored both Capoccia and Turner for a 2-0 lead. After Gray advanced to third on a passed ball, Tiffany Redding reached on an error, which scored Gray from third.
Jordan Larsen earned the victory after pitching a complete game to improve her record to 9-10 on the season. Larsen allowed five hits as she posted her second shutout of the season. Allison Williams suffered the loss for San Diego dropping her record to 7-15 on the season.
In the second game, Saint Mary's lost to LMU 2-1 to decide the number one seed in Sunday's elimination round. The Gaels got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Jennifer Arnold scored on a groundout by Capoccia. The Lions answered in the bottom of the inning when Tiffany Lawson's RBI single plated Megan Julian from second base. LMU scored its winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single by Sami Strinz.
Strinz also earned the victory on the mound for the Lions, improving her record to 14-6 on the season. She tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits. Jennifer Eaton took the loss for SMC as she pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Sunday, May 12 in the elimination round of the WISL Tournament. The Gaels enter the final day of the tournament as the number two season and will face San Diego or Santa Clara at 9:00 am at Cottrell Field.
