Moraga, CA - On Friday, May 17, the Saint Mary's baseball team (22-26/14-14 WCC) ended a five-game losing streak after defeating the Santa Clara Broncos (24-30/14-14 WCC), 5-3 at Louis Gusto Field. Starting pitcher Kevin Trochez threw his fourth complete game of the season to improve to 6-5 on the season.

Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was shortstop Brett Wayne, he finished 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Mark Teahen also contributed offensively, finishing 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and one run scored.

Both team's went scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Broncos tallied one after a lead-off double by Mark Folgner. The Gaels Trochez allowed two more free bases after tallying two hit batters. Jack Headley would then connect on a single up the middle to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.

The Gaels began a rally in the bottom half of the inning as Nick Conte led-off with a hit-by-pitch. Wayne then followed with a single and was later followed by an Adam Thompson walk. With the bases loaded Teahen came in the clutch with a two-out two-run single. Tim Spooner then followed with a double to right center to score Thompson and Teahen and give the Gaels a 4-2 advantage after three innings of play.

In the bottom of the fourth the Gaels added another run as Mike Harris connected on his 11 double of the season and later scored on a Wayne single to give SMC a 5-2 advantage going into the fifth inning.

Ryan Chiarelli scored for the Broncos in the top of the seventh after reaching base on a Gael error. This cut the Gaels lead to 5-3 going into the seventh inning stretch.

Trochez would leave the Broncos scoreless in the final two innings to give the Gaels their 14 West Coast Conference victory. After nine innings, Trochez gave up two earned runs on nine hits and added five strikeouts. Losing pitcher was Matt Travis, who falls to 5-4 on the season.
