Final Stats
Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (22-27/14-15 WCC) fell to the Santa Clara Broncos, 11-1, on Saturday, May 18 at Louis Gusto Field. SCU's Joey Gomes finished the game with four hits with three runs and two RBI, while Pat Peavey and Joe Diefenderfer collected three hits each.
Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was third baseman Mark Teahen as he finished 3-for-4 at the plate to raise his season average to .412.
The Santa Clara Broncos jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings of play. SCU scored two runs in the second and fifth and tallied one run in the third. Only three runs were earned as the Gaels stuttered defensively. Peavey and Joe Diefenderfer tallied all three Bronco RBI.
In the bottom of the fifth the Gaels would tally their first and only run of the game. Nick Conte led-off with a single and advanced to third after an Adam Thompson single. Conte would then score on a Jeff Cunningham sacrifice bunt. After five innings of play the Broncos led 5-1.
The Broncos would add to their lead in the sixth after three straight base hits by Ryan Chiarelli, Diefenderfer and A.J. LaBarbera, respectively. LaBarbera's single scored Chiarelli to give SCU a 6-1 advantage. Gomes then recorded his 31 double of the year against relief pitcher Matt Dolen. Gomes scored both Diefenderfer and LaBarbera, giving the Broncos an 8-1 lead. Santa Clara would tally two more runs to lead 10-1 after six innings.
Losing pitcher for the Gaels was Eric Bowden who went five innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. His season record falls to 5-6. Winning pitcher for the Broncos was John Redmond who improves to 6-6 on the season.
The Gaels and Broncos will meet again for the final game of the season on Sunday, May 19 at Louis Gusto Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm on senior day.
