Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (19-21/11-9 WCC) defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs (23-23/11-11 WCC) on Friday, May 3 to win game-one of the three-game series in West Coast Conference action at Louis Gusto Field. The Gaels were paced offensively by Tim Spooner, who finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and his sixth homerun of the season. He also added a career-high 8 RBI and one run.
Besides Spooner's three hits, Brian Houle, Mark Teahen, and Nick Conte all recorded two hits on the day for the Gaels to lead SMC to their eleventh win in West Coast Conference play.
The Gaels wasted no time to get on the board, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Jason Waugh began the attack with a single to center. Mike Sansoe reached on an error and Mark Teahen followed with a walk. Spooner scored both Waugh and Sansoe on a double down the left field line. Jeff Cunningham later scored Teahen on a ground out to give the Gaels a 3-0 lead.
The 'Zags would tally a run in the third on a Jeff Culpepper RBI. Sam Hess scored on the play after he began the inning with a single and advanced on a error as well as a wild pitch.
The Gaels would retaliate with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Teahen scored Sansoe on a ground out to the second baseman after a Sansoe walk and Houle single. Houle would later score on a Spooner double, giving the Gaels a 5-1 advantage.
Gonzaga would score their final two runs of the game in the fifth as Kevin Richardson hit his 13 homerun of the season. The homerun scored Nate Gold, who reached on a walk.
The Gaels would record a run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and three runs in the eighth. Spooner recorded five RBI for the Gaels of the final six runs SMC scored. Spooner capped of the eighth with a three run homerun to put the game out of reach for the 'Zags.
Starting pitcher Kevin Trochez went seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He also added eight strikeouts. With the win his season records now improves to 5-4. Losing pitcher was Ed Clelland who moves to 5-5 on the season.
These two teams will meet again on Saturday, May 4, at Louis Gusto Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
