Final Stats

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (20-21/12-9 WCC) took game-two over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (23-24/11-12 WCC) on Saturday, May 4 to guarantee a series win in West Coast Conference action at Louis Gusto Field. With the win the Gaels are now in first place in the Coast division, with a one-game lead over Pepperdine and Santa Clara.

Offensively the Gaels were led by shortstop Brett Wayne and third baseman Mark Teahen. Both players finished with two hits on the day with a run scored. Houle had a game-high two RBI after connecting on his eighth homerun of the season in the seventh inning.

The Gaels got out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning after struggling in the first two innings against Gonzaga starter Brent Dayton. Dayton struck out four of the first six batters he faced. Nick Conte began the attack in the third with a single to center field. Wayne followed with a double to score Conte and advanced to third on the throw. Jason Waugh reached base on a slow chopper to third base, which scored Wayne to give the Gaels the advantage.

The 'Zags would retaliate with a run in the top of the fourth. Sam Hess hit a double to right center and would advance to third on a Grant Zurmely single to center. Kemp Quackenbush would record the RBI on a fielder's choice to cut the Gaels lead in half.

The Gaels recorded a run themselves in the fourth as Teahen began the rally with a double to left center. After an intentional walk to Tim Spooner, Jeff Cunningham singled to left to give the Gaels a 3-1 lead.

The Gaels would add to that lead in the seventh when Houle hit a 400 foot bomb to center field. The round-tripper scored Mike Sansoe who reached base on a single to center field.

GU's catcher Kevin Richardson would connect on his 14 homerun of the season in the eighth, this one a solo shot to bring the score to 5-2.

Starting pitcher Eric Bowden would sit down the next four batters he faced to receive the win and record his third complete game of the season. With the win, Bowden improves to 5-5 on the season. GU's Dayton received the loss to move to 3-4 on the season.

These two teams will meet again on Sunday, May 5, at Louis Gusto Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m for the final game of the three-game series.
