Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (21-22/13-9 WCC) was defeated by the Pepperdine Waves (24-27/12-11 WCC) on Monday, May 6 after ten innings of play in West Coast Conference action at Louis Gusto Field. Pepperdine's Ty Harper hit the game-winning RBI to end a three-game losing streak for the Waves.
Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was Jason Waugh who finished 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored. Brian Houle and Tim Spooner also contributed with two hits apiece.
Fortunately for the Gaels, with the loss they still hold the lead in the Coast division with a half-game advantage over Santa Clara.
The Waves were first to score in the top of the second inning to gain a 1-0 advantage. Chris Kelly did the damage as he led-off with his 15 homerun of the season, this one a solo shot.
The Gaels would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Nick Conte double to center field. His double scored Jeff Cunningham who reached base on a single to center field.
Pepperdine would take the lead again in the fifth as Simon Ferrer began the rally with a single to center. Catcher Brent Haapenen then followed with a single of his own and Cory Brightwell reached first on a walk to load the bases. Duke Sardinha then singled to left field to score Ferrer and Haapenen and give the Waves a 3-1 lead.
The Gaels would retaliate in the bottom half of the inning as Brian Houle smashed a round-tripper to left field. His ninth homerun of the season scored Jason Waugh, who reached on a walk, tying the score at 3 apiece.
As both teams recon veined to complete the game, the score remained tied at three until the top of the tenth inning. Designated hitter Harper hit the game-winning RBI to right field to score Sardinha and Haapenen and give the Waves their 24 win of the season.
Losing pitcher for the Gaels was Dane Dobrinich after throwing four innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. His record now falls to 1-2 on the season. Pepperdine's Brandon Boesch earned the win to improve to 5-4 on the season.
The Gaels will continue West Coast Conference action when they travel to play the Pepperdine Waves in a four-game series beginning on Friday, May 10. First
