San Diego, CA- The Saint Mary's women's volleyball played a hard fought match against the No. 17-ranked San Diego Toreros before eventually falling by the final score of 3-1. Game scores for the Toreros victory over the Gaels were 30-25, 20-30, 30-27, and 30-27. With the loss Saint Mary's falls to 15-7 (2-3) while San Diego improved to 14-4 (3-1).
The Gaels fell behind early to San Diego after dropping the first game 30-25, but stormed back to take game two in commanding fashion by the score of 30-20. However, San Diego seemed to put the match away with a close victory in game three by a score of 30-27. The Toreros' were aided by Saint Mary's .222 hitting percentage and a team total of only 12 kills in the third game. Unfortunately, Saint Mary's lost the final game and eventually the match to the Toreros after San Diego produced more kills and digs than the Gaels.
Offensively, the Gaels were led by senior Jill Parmele. The Acampo, CA native finished with a match-high 22 kills and five digs. Parmele also posted six block assists. Also supplying stellar offensive support was sophomore Kaui Salzman. The San Diego, Ca native posted 11 kills and a match-high 21 digs against the Toreros. Salzman also finished with one block assist on the evening.
Aside from Salzman Saint Mary's was led defensively by Stacey O'Connor and Christina Kirk. O'Connor, a 2002 All-WCC Honorable Mention honoree, recorded two block assists and three digs on the night while also finishing second on the team with 12 kills. Kirk, a freshman, also helped anchor the Saint Mary's defense with a match-high eight block assist and the only two solo blocks of the match. Kirk also finished with one dig and five kills for the Gaels.
Also playing well for the Gaels were freshmen Cassandra Kolkka and Mandy Bible. Kolkka played solid defense with a total of 10 digs against the Toreros. Bible, a setter, finished with a team-high 55 assists on the night. Wrapping up the Gael contributors was Lindsay Bogason who posted six kills and nine digs for the match against San Diego.
The Gaels resume their conference schedule tomorrow, Saturday, October 18 against No. 14-ranked Santa Clara at 7:05 PM. On Friday, October 17 the Broncos defeated San Francisco by the final score of 3-0 to improve to 4-0 in conference action.
