Santa Clara, CA- The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat against WCC foe and No. 14-ranked Santa Clara by the final score of 3-0. Game scores of the Broncos victory over the Gaels were 30-27, 30-23, and 30-24. With the loss, Saint Mary's fell to 15-8 overall on the season and 2-4 in WCC action. Santa Clara improved to 14-6 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.
Saint Mary's struggled offensively during their match against the Broncos. In games one and three the Gaels were held under a .200 hitting percentage. For the match, the Broncos were aided by the Gaels 46 kills and .203 team hitting percentage. Though the Gaels produced 21 block assists to the Broncos 10, it was not enough to stop the Santa Clara offensive attack. Against Saint Mary's, Santa Clara totaled 17 more kills after finishing with 63 kills.
On the match, Saint Mary's was led by sophomore outside hitter Kaui Salzman. The San Diego, CA native posted her second double-double of the week in kills and digs, thus being the only Gael player to accomplish that feat. For the match against Santa Clara, Salzman tied for the match-high with 16 kills, 11 digs, and four block assists.
Also playing hard in the Gaels match against the Broncos was junior Stacey O'Connor. The 2002 All-WCC Honorable Mention honoree posted a .417 hitting percentage after finishing with seven kills. The middle blocker also recorded a match-high six block assists.
The Gael will next take the court when they travel to San Francisco to take on the Lady Dons in conference action on Saturday, October 25 at 7:05 PM in the War Memorial Gym.
