Los Angeles, CA- The Saint Mary's women's volleyball team lost a hard-fought match against #21-ranked Loyola Marymount by the final score of 3-2. Game scores for the Lions defeat of the Gaels were 17-30, 29-31, 30-28, 30-22, 9-15. With the loss the Gaels fall to 13-5 (0-1), while the Lions improved to 15-2 (1-0).
The Gaels got off to a slow start of the evening by dropping their first two games by the scores of 17-30 and 29-31 to the Lions in Gersten Pavilion. Most notably, the Lions were aided by the Gaels .025 hitting percentage in game one. However, Saint Mary's showed immeasurable courage by never giving in to the LMU. The Gaels were able to take the next two games by scores of 30-28 and 30-22. In the fourth game, the Gaels had their best hitting percentage of the night as they recorded 19 kills with only four errors in 39 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage. With the match tied at two games apiece, the two team went into the fifth and final game of the match. Unfortunately, the Lions took the fifth and deciding game of the match by a final score of 15-9.
Even though the Gaels were defeated many individuals had outstanding performances against Loyola Marymount. Offensively, the Gaels were led by senior Jill Parmele. The Acampo, CA native tied a match-high with 25 kills against the Lions. Parmele also posted 13 kills, one ace, and one block assists on the night.
Also providing offensive support for the Gaels was Kaui Salzman. The sophomore finished with a double- double as she recorded 20 kills and 18 digs for the match. Junior Lindsey Bogason also helped the Gaels record 74 kills to the Lions 71, when she personally finished with 16 kills. Saint Mary's was able to out-kill the Lions due in part to Mandy Bible's match-high 66 assists.
Defensively, Saint Mary's was led by Erin Gravert and Stacey O'Connor. Gravert helped anchor the Saint Mary's defense as she finished with three solo blocks and three block assists. O'Connor, a 2002 All-WCC Honorable Mention honoree, finished with a total of two block assists and two solo blocks for the match.
The Gaels will resume action tomorrow, Saturday, October 4 when they travel to Malibu, CA to take on the Pepperdine Waves at 7:05 PM.
