Women's Volleyball Knocks off #13 LMU in Five

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's senior outside hitter Jill Parmele racked up 34 kills to pace the Saint Mary's women's volleyball team to a 3-2, five-game West Coast Conference victory over the No. 13-ranked Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday night from McKeon Pavilion. Individual game results were 27-30, 30-21, 20-30, 30-25 and 15-11. The win for the Gaels avenged a 2-3 loss to LMU from October 10 in Los Angeles. With the win Saint Mary's improves to 17-10 overall and 3-6 in the West Coast Conference.

For the Gaels, four players tallied double digits in kills with Parmele leading all players in the match. Parmele's 34 kills set a West Coast Conference and Saint Mary's season record by topping fellow teammate Lindsey Bogason's five-game record when she tallied 32 kills against UC Irvine. Kaui Salzman posted her ninth straight double-double in WCC play as she tallied 15 kills and a match-high 22 digs. Stacey O'Connor and Cassandra Kolkka added 11 kills each.

As a team, Saint Mary's set a 2003 WCC single game record by scorching the Lions for 82 kills in the match. Saint Mary's hit .201 for the game while the Lions hit .222 overall with 61 total kills in the match.

In game one of the match, Saint Mary's opened a 17-10 lead before Loyola Marymount rallied to even the game at 19-19. SMC regained its lead at 27-24 before LMU scored the final six points of the game for a 30-27 game-one win. Dina DeBernardi hit .500 with four kills in the opening game to help LMU to the early lead in the match. Jill Parmele paced the Gaels with eight kills in the opening stanza.

Parmele scorched the Lions for 12 kills in the second game alone, to pace SMC to a 30-21 victory in game two. The Gaels opened a commanding 14-4 advantage and did not let up. SMC posted a .375 hitting percentage in game two to even the match at 1-1.

In game three the Lions were firing on all cylinders. LMU regrouped in the intermission and posted a dominating 30-20 victory in the third game. With the score tied at 9-9, Loyola Marymount 15-4 run to put the game out of reach. Tiana Newsome tallied four kills to help LMU post a .363 hitting percentage in the third game.

Saint Mary's evened the match at two games a piece with a 30-25 win in game four. The Gaels posted a .263 hitting percentage in game four and limited the Lions to just .116. With the score tied at 15-15, Saint Mary's ran off four straight points to take a 21-15 lead, before eventually winning the game by five points.

In the fifth game Saint Mary's jumped out to an 8-4 advantage when the teams traded sides. The Lions cut the deficit to 11-9, but the Gaels rallied to take a four-point victory in game five and a 3-2 win in the match.

Saint Mary's will continue in West Coast Conference action when it travels to Portland on Friday, November 7. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Chiles Center.
