Feb. 15, 2003

Final Stats

Moraga, CA - The Nevada Wolf Pack scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Saint Mary's, 9-7, on Saturday, February 15 at Louis Guisto Field. Nevada improves to 4-4 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 1-5.

The Gaels took an early lead in the bottom half of the first inning when James Gaulke knocked in Gilbert Gil on a single. Gil got on base on an error by the third baseman.

Nevada would retaliate in the top of the second inning as Ben Mummy began the rally with a single and was followed with back-to-back doubles by Jamaal Jackson and Chris Gimenez. After two innings of play the Wolf Pack led 2-1.

The Wolf Pack would extend their lead to 3-1 when Jacob Butler hit a single to score Chris Gimenez.

In the bottom half of the fifth inning the Gaels tied up the score at three a piece. After a Gil walk, Adam Bellows singled and Tim Spooner scored both runners with a single.

With the score tied, Gualke connected on his second homerun of the series and season, in the sixth inning. This time it was a grand slam, the first of his career, scoring Mike Harris, Bellows and Gil and giving the Gaels a 7-3 lead after six innings of play.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Wolf Pack added another run as Bowden walked three straight batters. With SMC's Dane Dobrinich in relief, Nevada's Bret Hayes scored Taylor Pullins on a single. Dobrinich then recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get the Gaels out of a bases loaded jam.

In the top of the ninth inning the Wolf Pack battled back to tie up the score at seven runs. Mummy hit a double to right center to score Hayes, who reached on a fielder's choice. Mike Haas would then hit a single to score Brian Gazero, who replaced Mummy. Gimenez would then give Nevada a 9-7 lead with a two-run homerun to right center field.

Nevada's pitcher Bryan Johnson earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the season, while SMC's Dobrinich falls to 1-2. Three Gaels collected multi-hits in the game as Gaulke, Spooner and Bryan Byrne finished with two hits and Harris recorded three hits.

The Gaels will finish off the three-game series against Nevada on Sunday, February 16. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Louis Guisto Field.
