Final Stats
Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (2-5) scored seven runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Nevada Wolf Pack (4-5), 10-7, in the final game of the three-game series. Both Mike Sansoe and Mike Harris collected three hits on the day.
Nevada wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring two runs in the first inning. After a Chris Dickerson walk, Jacob Butler doubled to score the game's first run.
The Gaels added a run in the bottom half of the second inning to bring the score to 2-1. The Gaels' Harris doubled in Adam Thompson, who reached base on a walk.
Thompson would score again in the bottom of the fourth inning on a double to left centerfield by Nick Conte. Conte would be tagged out at third for the third out of the inning, attempting to stretch out a double.
The Gaels' Harris led off of the fifth inning with a triple and was followed by a Sansoe single to give SMC a 3-2 lead.
The Gaels would extend their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning to 10-2. After a Thompson walk, Conte singled and Harris would follow with a single to score Thompson. Sansoe followed with a double, his second hit of the day, to score both runners. With Nevada's Chris Scott in relief, SMC's Gilbert Gil hit a double to left to score Sansoe. Adam Bellows would add to the rally with the Gaels' third consecutive double, this time scoring Gil. Hitting seemed contagious as Gaulke hit another single to score Bellows. Later Gaulke would score on a Bryan Byrne triple, finishing off a seven-run sixth inning.
The Wolf Pack would add to their score in the top of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Tom Taber came in relief for the Gaels and hit the first batter he faced. Taber later walked two batters as Nevada added another run to bring the score to 10-5.
Nevada would score two late runs in the ninth inning, but it was a case of too little, too late.
Winning pitcher for the Gaels was Justin Sloan, who improves to 1-1 on the season. The freshman threw 4.1 innings, while giving up just one hit and tallying five strikeouts. Matt Yourkin picked up his second save of the season after facing two Wolf Pack hitters.
The Gaels will return to non-conference action when they take on the California Golden Bears on Tuesday, February 18. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Evans Diamond.
